Station layout and ergonomics
Arranging a safe, efficient shack.
Arranging a safe, efficient shack.
Layout is how the radio, accessories, power and cables are arranged. A good layout makes the station comfortable to operate for hours, safe to run, and quiet in the receiver. Most of it is common sense, but the safety and interference parts are worth doing on purpose.
Switching power supplies, computers, chargers and LED lighting all create RF noise, and the shack is full of them. Space them from the radio and its antenna feed, use common-mode chokes on their cables, and keep the receive antenna away from the building's wiring. Run a test: turn each device off and listen. See RFI and EMI overview and Common-mode current and ground loops.
