Many letters sound alike over a noisy radio link: B, D, P and T; M and N; F and S. The phonetic alphabet replaces each letter with a distinct word, so "W5YI" is copied correctly as Whiskey Five Yankee India. Use it for call signs, names, places and anything unusual.
The words were chosen to be easy to say and hard to confuse in many languages and on weak signals. That is why the official spellings are Alfa and Juliett: spelled that way, speakers of any language pronounce them as intended. English-speaking hams usually say "Alpha" and "Juliet", and nobody minds.
