How to find mentors, clubs, nets, hamfests and learning groups.
Amateur radio has a long tradition of experienced operators helping newcomers. The informal word for such a helper is an Elmer, a mentor who answers questions, lends a hand with an antenna and sits beside you for your first contacts. Clubs, nets and meetings are where Elmers are found.
A club is the single most useful thing a new ham can join. Typical benefits:
Clubs can hold a license of their own. A club station license needs a trustee and at least four members. The trustee does not have to be an Amateur Extra, and the club does not have to belong to a national organisation such as the ARRL. The ARRL is a hobby association, not a regulator.
| Where | What you get |
|---|---|
| Nets | Scheduled on-air gatherings; a low-pressure place to practise procedure |
| Hamfests | Swap meets and conventions where gear is bought and sold, with talks and sometimes exam sessions |
| Online groups | Forums, video calls and study groups; handy when no club is nearby |
| Special-interest groups | Groups for SOTA, satellites, CW and more |
